Appearances

Core series

In Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version as well as their upper version Pokémon Platinum Version, the player can find Plates either Underground or in Amity Square if they talk to their Pokémon following them once in a while. There is also one of each type of Plate with an inscription about the creation of Pokémon.

In Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version, the player can obtain Plates from the captain of the S.S. Aqua, who gives them one Plate per day. If the player has collected every Plate, the captain stops giving them more and only gives one Nugget per day instead.

In Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version, most Plates are located in the Abyssal Ruins. The only exception is the Draco Plate and the Splash Plate, which the player can receive at Route 13 by speaking to a Trainer in a building.

In Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, Plates can be found in various places around the Kalos region. With the introduction of the Fairy type, both games also introduce another type of Plate, the Pixie Plate.

In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, nearly all Plates can be found in certain areas while Underwater.

In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Plates are key items that can be used to change Arceus' type. One of the game's main quests is to collect all the plates. The plates are given by Ride Pokémon, Noble Pokémon and Legendary Pokémon. The game also introduces two more types, the Blank Plate and the Legend Plate.

In Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, the player can obtain nearly any Plate from the Porto Marinada Market if they have an Arceus, regardless of whether it is in their party or stored in a PC. The only exceptions are the Blank Plate and the Legend Plate. Unlike in earlier core games, Plates cannot be sold.

Pokémon the Series

In the film Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life, Arceus uses his Plates to create a barrier to protect himself while stopping the asteroid, thereby saving the entire Pokémon World from destruction. Later, he combines the Earth, Splash, Meadow, Zap, and Draco Plates – representing the powers of ground, water, grass, electricity, and dragon. As described: "The power of ground, water, and grass, combined with the power of electricity — they all meld together. And with the power of dragon, they increase." These Plates then transform as Arceus creates the Jewel of Life for Damos.

Plates briefly appear in another film, Pokémon the Movie: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages. During a flashback, Ghris is seen using the Splash, Flame, and Earth Plates to produce the Prison Bottle.

In the fourth part of the Arceus Chronicles, Team Galactic tries to use Arceus' Flame Plate in attempt to bring back Cyrus. Arceus use his Water Plate to become the Water-type Pokémon to protect the Heatran as well retaking its Flame Plate.

In the HeartGold & SoulSilver Chapter of Pokémon Adventures, all 16 Plates appear in some of the chapters. In "Raising the Stakes with Rhyperior", Silver is seen with every Plate and explains their purpose. A few chapters later, in "All About Arceus III", Silver takes every Plate to where Arceus is, although in "All About Arceus IV", Archer uses the Plates to attack the Pokédex Holders.
